Truly splendid is the Romantic-style Bojnice Castle, with some original Gothic and Renaissance elements. Perched on a travertine hill, it is visible almost throughout the Upper Nitra region. The first written records mentioning it date back to 1113 in a well-known document kept at Zobor Abbey in Nitra. The Castle belonged to descendants of the Great Moravian and Slovak noble family of Hont-Pázmány, the first known member of whom was Casimir.
The Bojnice Castle was later acquired by great Matthew Csak of Trenčín, who owned it until 1321. The Castle was elevated to the status of a national cultural monument in 1970. Bojnice Castle is one of our most visited castles and was once owned by the most famous aristocratic family. When visiting it, you can meet ghosts or even lost souls. At the entrance to the castle, there is a well-known six-hundred-year-old linden tree planted by King Matthias.
