Levoča, Important City in the History and Culture of Slovakia
The most beautiful architectural component of the valuable town of Levoča is without a shadow of a doubt the Town Hall from the 15th century. It used to be the seat Town Council that made decisions here not only on the fate of the town and its inhabitants but also the fate of Levoča surroundings.
The original Gothic building was reconstructed in the Renaissance style in the 17th century, followed up a century later with a Baroque-style reconstruction of the belfry, which was joined with the rest of the building by a new roof. The most extensive reconstruction took place in 1893-95. The Town of Levoča is dominated by a steep hill with a neo-gothic church „Mariánska hora“.
It is one of the oldest and most important pilgrimage sites in Slovakia. The chapel on Mariánska hora was built to express gratitude to the people of Spiš for being saved at this place during the Tatar raid in the years 1241-1242. Mariánska hora in Levoča is a source of spiritual energy and is visited by thousands of people every year.
