Nitra is the mother of all Slovak towns. Allegedly founded /like Rome/ on seven hills. It was the center of the oldest known Slavic polity in present-day Slovakia, the Principality of Nitra in the 9th century – under ruling prince Pribina.
In 828, the first Christian church in the whole of Central Europe was built at the foot of the Zobor Hill in Nitra. Since the times of then-Archbishop Methodius, Nitra has been the seat of the Nitra diocese and a symbol of Slovak spiritual sovereignty.
